Eyes of Illusion

It was so smooth,
the scrap sheet was,
taunting her scarred body
as it was unscathed
by the disturbing morals
of her society.
How could an inanimate object
so effectively strip her
of the will to move,
the literal will and reasoning
to enact motive force?
And like an augury she fell.
She tossed and she tumbled
over the edge of the pier into nothingness.
Not the ocean below,
nor the sand,
but nothingness.

And sure enough,
when she awoke from her tender sleep,
she was enlightened by the
foreboding message of the gods;
Because while hanging by her foot,
staring into the broken glass,
she saw the upside down reflection
of a familiar slip of oil cloth
that now read, repeatedly:
"2 turtle doves 2 turtle doves 2 turtle doves 2 turtle..."
